About Us
It was the year 1989, when one fine day on 8th of January , came up the topic of Durga Puja between few fellow Bengalis, who then were amongst many that attended the famed Puja in Lonavala every year. The Durga Puja which started in Lonavala in the year 1971 attracted Bengalis from nearby towns, a majority being from Khopoli. Although means of commuting was difficult in those days, there was nothing that could stop a “Bengali” who was away from home to attend this puja.
“Prabasi” finally acquired the status of a registered organization under the Charity Commission of the Govt of Maharashtra by the name “Prabasi Bengalee Association, Khopoli” in the year 2003.Today the association boasts of approximately 100 families under its banner and together with the immense help of the localites continues to successfully conduct many festivities like Kali Puja, Saraswati Puja, Lakshmi Puja, Borsha Mongal, Netaji Subhash Chandra Jayanti, Rabindra Jayanti, Poila Boishakh, ofcourse Durga Puja being closest to heart!

Durga puja is not limited to Bengal or Bengalis. The worship is spared worldwide now. Kolkata Durga puja is the most popular, but Durga Puja celebrations in Mumbai, India, also have the same charm. Wherever you are, the puja celebrations will fill your heart with joy. In Mumbai, It’s called Navaratri or Durga puja, but the feelings are the same.
Whenever we Bengalis close our eyes, we see the beautiful idol of goddess Durga. Whenever we listen, we always hear mesmerizing Dhak music. “Maa Asche” is our favourite phrase. We wait for an entire year to welcome Maa Durga, and when she goes back, nothing feels good. We only have the hope, that next year Maa come again. Her blessings are there with us forever and ever.
The Durga Puja which started in Lonavala in the year 1971 attracted Bengalis from nearby towns, a majority being from Khopoli. Although means of commuting was difficult in those days, there was nothing that could stop a “Bengali” who was away from home to attend this puja. Still, the thought of having a Puja, close to home lingered on the minds of all. The worship of Saraswati started a unity among all the Bengali families in Khopoli, everyone had one question in mind, “why not have a Sarbojanin Durga Puja in Khopoli itself”?
And so during the discussion the topic was broached. The discussion soon led to a meeting attended by all Bengalis of Khopoli,8th January 1989 who unanimously agreed to bring the Goddess home to our town.
Soon thereafter the preparations began under the guidance of Late Shri T.K. Bhattacharya, Late Shri N.C. Chatterjee, Late B.C.Banerjee and Late S.R.Saha and there emerged “Prabasi” club with approximately 40 families under its banner. The first President of the club was Late Mr.S.R.Saha. Since then, there has been no looking back. And “Prabasi” finally acquired the status of a registered organization under the Charity Commission of the Govt of Maharashtra by the name “Prabasi Bengalee Association, Khopoli” in the year 2003. Today the association boasts of approximately 100 families under its banner and together with the immense help of the localites continues to successfully conduct many festivities like Kali Puja, Saraswati Puja, Lakshmi Puja, Borsha Mongal, Netaji Subhash Chandra Jayanti, Rabindra Jayanti, Poila Boishakh, ofcourse Durga Puja being closest to heart!
